How To Spot DRY ROT – What Are The Signs?
Keeping an eye out for dry rot could save your home!
Dry rot is more than just visible decay and damage. There are numerous signs that dry rot is starting to take hold, which is why it’s important to spot any damage as early as possible. Restoration is easier when you prevent damage from reaching your foundation, but what are the signs you need to look out for?
Signs of Dry Rot
- Damp, Musty Stench – “Old wood” is more than a distinct smell, it could be a sign that you are already experiencing dry rot.
- Red Spore Dust – small spore dust is a fruiting body, indicating your dry rot is in the advanced stages and needs to be addressed immediately.
- Wood Damage – visible changes in wood like cracking, splitting, or crumbling are a sign of extremely advanced dry rot that has most likely spread throughout your home.
Your home is in constant danger of dry rot, but it’s not the only fungus that could lead to your next home restoration, you also need to watch for wet rot!

How To Spot WET ROT – What Are The Signs?
Wet Rot could already be creeping into your home – know what to look for!
Wet rot is a common label used to describe a wide variety of fungi that break down wood, creating numerous issues concerning structural integrity and strength. A simple wet spot, or damp conditions, can create a fungal growth that spreads and leads to brittle and damaged wood. Spotting wet rot early can keep it emitting more spores, preventing it from spreading to other surfaces.
Signs of Wet Rot
- Discolored Wood – lighter or darker coloring can be an indication of wet rot, often combined with a spongy texture that’s soft to the touch. Brown and white rot are both visible in the early stages.
- Cracking – high moisture levels can cause wood to become brittle and crack.
- “Wet” Wood – damp conditions can exist in any climate, but consistently damp wood is a sign that wet rot is growing and expanding.
- Damp Smells – wet rot has no natural scent, but the high levels of moisture that lead to the fungus have a distinct musty smell that could be the first indicator of wet rot.

Damage Repair Services
San Mateo & Santa Clara Counties
We offer customers treatment methods based on their home’s specific needs and construction type. Each unique method comes with a different required set of skills and tools.
These are just a few of the treatments that Franz Termite Control specializes in:
- Termite Treatment—Because treatment for termites and rot damage varies, depending on the type of termite and the location and extent of the infestation, you need specialists like us to make sure the building is termite-free.
- Fumigation—To ensure all dry wood termites are eliminated, you may need a fumigation professional. That’s us! We use a proven process that’s been used successfully for almost 50 years. But, you don’t always have to fumigate.
- Rot or Fungus Damage Repair—While an inspection performed by Franz Termite Control is often referred to as a “Termite Inspection”, we do more to go above and beyond for our customers. Our “official” term for the inspection is “Wood Destroying Pest and Organisms Inspection”. One of the largest sources of damage in wooden structures is rot or fungus damage. More wood is destroyed each year by fungus (rot) decay than by all fire, floods, and termites combined. When inspecting your homes our trained and licensed inspectors are looking for so much more than just termites!
- Crawlspace Moisture Prevention—High humidity causes moisture in the unseen spaces of your house or building. This will often go unnoticed while insidious moisture damage establishes a colony. A few serious ramifications to unaddressed crawlspace moisture are:
- Rot (which weakens the structural integrity of the building
- Dust mite colonies
- Mold (which can be unhealthy if a concentrated mold colony reduces air quality)
We design treatment methods to complete major and minor repair projects for all of our clients.
Franz Termite Guarantee
If they come back, so do we. We stand by our work and it shows. Your home will be termite-free.
