Easy steps you can take to prevent termites and rot. Get Out of the Dirt.
Don’t let the dirt destroy your house. A common source of damage and termite infestation is called an earth-wood contact condition. Simply put, it means dirt or debris is touching wood on your house. This is usually occurs at the base of the wall siding and trim and at columns and posts. Soil and debris will trap moisture against the wood which will lead to rot; create a termite friendly environment; and give soil-dwelling subterranean termites a direct avenue of access to your home.
One of the easiest things you can do to avoid termite infestation is to prevent soil and debris from contacting wood. Often, simply raking back accumulated soil/debris will correct this. In some cases it may be necessary to dig out soil or do some minor landscaping to correct.
Take a Walk in the Rain.
Put on your raincoat and take a walk around your house during a heavy rainstorm. Look for signs of leaks, drips or stains on your roof eaves and walls doors and windows. Check to see if your gutters are backed up or overflowing. Moisture intrusion caused by these conditions causes rot fungus to grow and deteriorate wood and creates a great environment for termites to start infestations
Take control of your castle.
Maintenance. Maintenance. Maintenance. What do your teeth, your car, and your house have in common? They all need to be checked, cleaned, serviced and maintained. Keeping your house well maintained goes a long way towards preventing termites. Keep the exterior of your house well painted, caulked and sealed. Clean your gutters. Make sure that sprinklers aren’t spraying the house. Fix any leaks ASAP. Get a regular inspection of your entire house every 1 to 2 years. Find little problems before they become big problems and fix them. Proactive ongoing maintenance will save you money.
